Happiness is something we all seek, yet we often place it at the bottom of our to-do lists. We think, I’ll be happy when I finish this project, or I’ll be happy when I achieve that goal. But what if we stopped treating happiness as a distant reward and started prioritizing it in our daily lives? On International Day of Happiness, celebrated every March 20th, I like to reflect on the importance of choosing joy—not just for others, but for myself first.
As a translator and content creator, I’ve learned that happiness isn’t something that just happens to us; it’s something we cultivate. When I work on a challenging project, I can choose to stress over every detail or embrace the process with curiosity and passion. The same applies to life—our mindset plays a crucial role in how much joy we experience.

The Power of Prioritizing Our Own Happiness
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that I can’t pour from an empty cup. If I’m constantly trying to make others happy while neglecting my own well-being, I end up exhausted, uninspired, and even resentful. The truth is, making myself happy first isn’t selfish—it’s necessary. When I take care of my mental and emotional health, I can show up as a better friend, professional, and overall human being.
Happiness isn’t about being in a constant state of joy; that’s unrealistic. It’s about creating small, meaningful moments that bring peace, laughter, and fulfillment. Whether it’s taking a break to enjoy a cup of coffee, reading a book just for fun, or stepping outside for fresh air, these little things add up.
Spreading Happiness Starts Within
We often think of happiness in terms of making others smile, which is wonderful. But true, lasting happiness starts from within. When I take time to do what makes me feel good—whether it’s writing, spending time with loved ones, or simply resting—I naturally radiate that joy to those around me. The energy we carry affects others, so prioritizing our happiness isn’t just for us—it’s a gift to the people in our lives.
This International Day of Happiness, I encourage you to pause and ask yourself: What truly brings me joy? Then, make space for it. Happiness isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity, and it starts with you.
