Every year on the first Thursday of November, we recognize International Project Management Day—a day dedicated to appreciating project managers and the intricate, skillful work they do to keep projects on track. As a freelance translator, I’ve learned just how vital project management is in ensuring smooth workflows, meeting deadlines, and delivering quality work to clients. While I’m typically focused on words, not timelines and budgets, I’ve come to appreciate that project management is at the heart of everything I do.
The world of translation is much more than just converting words from one language to another. Behind every project is a web of deadlines, collaboration, and feedback loops. For larger projects, like translating a book, website, or series of marketing materials, careful coordination is essential. I often find myself in a project management role, organizing my time, prioritizing tasks, and sometimes even coordinating with other translators or editors. In essence, I’ve learned that being a translator also means being my own project manager—a role that requires as much adaptability as language skills.

What strikes me most about project management is its blend of art and science. It’s about balancing the rigid demands of timelines and budgets with the softer skills of communication and problem-solving. Every project, whether a single-page translation or a multi-language campaign, comes with its own unique challenges. Project managers have the tough job of anticipating these, organizing the right resources, and keeping everyone focused on the finish line. In my experience, effective project management can be the difference between a stressful deadline scramble and a smooth, steady workflow.
On International Project Management Day, it’s worth acknowledging not only professional project managers but also all of us who take on aspects of project management in our daily work. It’s a reminder that, whether you’re part of a team or working solo, managing a project means bringing order to complexity and keeping both the big picture and the details in sight.
For me, adopting project management skills has been a game changer, helping me stay organized, focused, and on time. It has taught me the importance of setting clear goals, breaking tasks down into manageable steps, and staying flexible enough to handle unexpected changes. These skills don’t just help me meet deadlines—they help me deliver my best work consistently.
So here’s to the project managers who make it all look effortless and to the rest of us who keep projects moving forward in our own ways. Happy International Project Management Day!
